the computer im guessing u just get the ball Y value and assign it to the paddle Y value?
the better the computer the quicker it can move to keep with the ball...

Was the X not the Y but yea thats it.
I started 3d game programming back in 2005 and was fiddling about in C before that, so I have quite a bit of a head start.
But I was never taught I learnt myself which means im actually pretty rubbish lol.
But I can make things work :) just... not... work.. well... as is evident in the games ive published on here... every single one of which has had major FPS issues lol

Particle effects are perfectly do-able using applets, but for it to work without lag you'll have to make the images static so you don't reload them every time you use them - my guess is this was where your lag was coming from.
